How to Do a Breast Self-Exam

Breast Cancer LumpsMonthly breast self-examination (BSE) is part of a woman’s defense against breast cancer. Many breast cancers are first discovered by the woman herself. One out of every three women will discover a lump in her breast, but more than 80% of breast lumps are not cancerous.

If you are not sure how to do a breast self exam, you can get a lesson at no additional fee when you get your mammogram at Breast Health Services. A registered nurse who is certified to teach BSE will give you a step-by-step demonstration so you can be confident when you examine yourself every month.

Ask Our Expert
Q: I heard the FDA recently approved a drug, Evista, to reduce the risk for breast cancer-is that true? Who can benefit from this medication?
A: Yes, in September the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Evista (the brand name for raloxifene previously used to treat osteoporosis) to help prevent breast cancer in postmenopausal women who are at high-risk for the disease.
